Antea Group was appointed by the UNDP PNG Country Office to carry out the Climate Risk, Vulnerability and Needs Assessment for Morobe, Madang, East Sepik, Northern and New Ireland Provinces of Papua New Guinea. This is the second study that Antea Group starts this year in the region. The tasks will be carried out in partnership with Hydroc GmbH and World Vision PNG. The global objective of the assignment is to identify Climate related Risks in the five provinces. Identification will involve mapping of the extent of Exposures and Vulnerabilities related tot principal climate hazards resulting in Composite Risk Atlas and Maps/Indexes at district level.
PNG is particularly prone to natural disasters induced by climate change, climate variability, and sea-level rise; including tsunamis, cyclones, river and coastal flooding, landslides, and droughts. The rising sea-level causes salt-water intrusion which puts groundwater resources at risk causing negative effects on agriculture production and water supply. Flooding may destroy housing as well as crop fields which combined with droughts increases the adverse effects of climate change on agricultural production and ultimately also food supply, as only insufficient storage is kept.
